The “perp” photo of the subject is dangerous, given attitudes towards LGTBQI+ people in Malawi. So is listing the specific village where the subject is from (and perhaps still lives). The author’s irresponsible phrasing “impersonating a female prostitute to steal from clients” implies intent that had not yet been determined at the time of arrest and publication. The story includes dangerous trans deception tropes. The author deliberately (presumably) misgenders the subject (“impersonates female prostitute” implies performance. “deceive men” is dangerous trans trope. “the impostor” “the fake prostitute”). This story violates serious journalism ethics and deserved immediate response from media watchdogs, Centre for the Development of People, non governmental organizations, etc.
